Apologies for the large gap between this chapter and the last but I've just had a ton of exams so there was a lot of revision which took up a lot of time! However, they're all done now so I can get back into this story again! :)

Protection in a Wild Land Update

Hello to all readers of Protection in a Wild Land and Sound of the Firing Guns,

I just wanted to apologise for the long gap between the last chapter and the....potential next one! :) I've got a load of exams on at the moment and these, coupled with all the revision, has eaten into writing Protection in a Wild Land and Sound of the Firing Guns etc...However, I am still writing them and they will be continued soon, most probably after exams have finished which is late June time! :) I may update before but there's more chance after this date! :D

So that's why there has been an even longer gap than usual! However I do have a lot of the rest of the two stories already planned so when I get back into them, hopefully there will be shorter gaps between the chapters. :)

Hope to see you then (maybe before!)

Ave Maria

My first excerpt from my novel!

Well...theoretically. I just really wanted to get something down because after a year of planning and researching and the such, I feel like I'm very very close to finally getting round to starting to write it. This is a little scene that I want in the novel but this is by no means the final cut of this scene! I just wanted to get a feel for how I'm going to write this etc...

Still, I hope you enjoy it! Feedback would be very helpful and I'd really, really appreciate it!

A little backstory to this piece: The story, Fighting With Their Eyes Closed, is set in the 19th century American West, at a little post constructed in the middle of hostile Indian territory called Fort Phil Kearny. It has been put there to protect travellers across the nearby Bozeman Trail but many people are calling for a fight with the hostile Indians. The commander of the fort, Colonel Carrington, struggles from this, amongst other issues such as disrespect and disobedience and a lack of belief in his abilities. He is, in essence, the main character of the novel (and the main character in this piece) but there are many others playing large parts in the story too. This little piece is set near the end of the story (but it doesn't give away too much) when he has been under the heavy strain and burdens for a long time.

I don't know how appealing that summary sounds but I don't want to give away too much of the story! But, seeing as its a historical novel, there is plenty of information about the events (that I have added a bit of artistic license too, adding and subjecting scenes) online if anyone is interested :)

Ave Maria

It was going to be another bitter day, he could feel it in the air when he stepped out from the shelter of his headquarters. The whole sky was warped around the edges with grey tinges and as he looked up at it, he could see a yellow glow trying to fight its way through the heavy veil before it was enveloped completely and a gust of wind sounded its failure. The colonel bowed his head. It was still white below his feet.

They wanted him at the hospital. It wasn’t that long of a journey from the headquarters but by the time he reached the building, only just completed, his heart was thudding and he could feel it in his head. Stars decorated the damp inside rafters and for a moment he stared at them, fixated by their twinkling, and knowing he didn’t want to look down.

‘’Colonel Carrington.’’ That was his name. It was being called by one of the corporals. He was standing by one of the beds, a hammer in his hand. Beside him, the colonel dared to glance at the wooden box, lying overturned on the cold floor. He knew its purpose.

‘’Yes, corporal.’’

‘’We’re not going to get this finished for today. We’ve been working all night but this cold…this damn weather…’’

‘’Yes, corporal.’’

‘’We’ll continue until it’s completed.’’

‘’Yes, corporal.’’

He turned to exit as quickly as he could muster. He didn’t look back and even when that same voice belonging to the corporal sounded again, he still didn’t, only pausing in the doorway. The breath of the wind bit at his skin.

‘’Yes, corporal?’’

‘’Merry Christmas, colonel.’’

He bowed his head once more and surrendered himself to the elements. The sound of the nails being hammered into the coffins echoed in his head all the way back to the headquarters. He knew he was walking faster than was safe against this ice beneath him but he didn’t care when he stumbled into the building. He didn’t care when he caught himself on the splinters and felt blood between his fingers. He didn’t care when all the stars returned to his vision.

The front door slammed. Then the door to his office.

And it was still there. That dull thudding. That muffled heartbeat.

His hand connected with the desk, rattling it. One vase shattered onto the floor. He scraped the chair across the wooden panelling. Something else splintered.

…or maybe it was gunshots he could still hear? Bang. Bang. Bang. There, again, in his head. Loud then soft, loud then soft.

His legs softened as he fell to the chair. Hands shook as he picked up the papers, smearing them with red. White lights burst. The crucifix was cold in his fingers.

He couldn’t breathe but he began to sing, trembling words spilling out.

‘’Ave Maria, gratia plena, Maria gratia plena, Maria gratia plena…’’
